Grassroots Groups Helping Women and Girls Pay for Abortion

When women and girls cannot afford to pay for a safe, legal abortion, they can turn to the members of the National Network of Abortion Funds for help. Abortion Funds are groups that provide direct financial assistance to cover the cost of abortion care. Many abortion Funds also help pay for emergency contraception and offer additional information and support. Some abortion Funds provide related services, including transportation to a clinic, housing for women who must travel far from home to reach a clinic, child care during the procedure, options counseling, and additional funding for ultrasound, pregnancy testing, or follow-up care.

Today, our Network includes over 100 abortion Funds in more than 40 states. Most of these abortion Funds are independent, grassroots, non-profit organizations run by volunteers. Some Funds are affiliated with progressive religious organizations, coalitions, or non-profit clinics. Only a few abortion Funds have paid staff members. Some Funds have hotline services and take calls directly from women seeking help, while others work through family planning and abortion clinics. Most Funds help women in a specific geographic area; some Funds help women all over the country.

Abortion Funds raise money from individuals as well as from some private foundations. Each year, our member Funds raise and disperse over $2 million to help more than 20,000 women who would not otherwise be able to obtain abortions.

Most Funds provide direct funding for abortions in the form of grants. About one-quarter of member Funds give assistance in the form of loans. Because most of the women helped have incomes below the poverty level, none of the abortion Funds expect full repayment of loans.

Just the Beginning ... Join Us!

Much still needs to be done. Despite the critical work of abortion Funds and our dedicated supporters across the country, no abortion Fund is able to meet the entire need for funding in its community or state.

We invite you to join our efforts by making a donation, getting involved in advocacy efforts to restore and increase public funding for abortion, or becoming part of a local abortion Fund.

Becoming Part of a Fund
There are two ways to become a member of an abortion Fund:

You can join an existing Fund in your area. To find a Fund near you, click on a location on the map or search our list of Funds by state. Because many Funds are run by volunteers, they often need help with intake, fundraising, providing transportation, housing, and other services. Each Fund is different, so contact the one in your area to find out how you can help.
If there is no abortion Fund in your area, consider starting one. While starting a Fund is a big project, the Network will provide assistance at every step of the process. Becoming a Member of the Network
Once you join or start an abortion Fund, you can join the National Network of Abortion Funds. Members receive the following support and resources:

Networking: your Fund will have regular contact with other groups doing this work. You won't have to reinvent the wheel. Other Funds in the Network are eager to share ideas, strategies, frustrations, and successes with you.
Training and member support: the Network provides help with fundraising, organizational development, volunteer and board recruitment, technology, strategic planning, advocacy training, and other needs.
Networking and training opportunities:

Regional meetings that provide the opportunity to attend training workshops and network with Funds in your state and neighboring states.
Annual Conference & Organizing Summit with panels and workshops to help strengthen your fundraising, advocacy, media, and organizational skills, and networking opportunities with Funds from around the country and allies within the reproductive justice field. Subsidies are available to member Funds for travel and conference fees.

Publications: the Network provides materials for outreach, education, and advocacy purposes. Members also receive a bi-annual newsletter and monthly e-newsletters.
Technological tools: membership offers access to free technological tools, including e-mail accounts, website hosting, and a customized client-tracking database.
Funding: the Network provides grants to help build your Fund’s capacity to help women in need and to enable you to conduct local and state advocacy campaigns to expand public funding for abortion, increase access to emergency contraception, and ensure full reproductive health care for all women.
Leadership opportunities: participation in the Network enables your Fund members to join Network task forces and take advantage of other leadership opportunities at the national level.
Advocacy leverage: membership offers an opportunity to join with groups across the country to advocate for enhanced public funding for abortion services and reproductive health care for all women.
